PEMF-Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

chronic pain

Chronic Pain

According to the Institute of Medicine, 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. That’s 1 in 3 people! Health institutions, researchers, and doctors everywhere are searching for answers to this widespread problem. Total financial cost of pain- over $600 billion per year. That’s more than cancer and heart disease combined! If that doesn’t raise an epidemic flag, I’m not real sure what does.

People in chronic pain are suffering, and just trying to make it through another day. Some resort to medications, some resort to other outlets. Few things are more frustrating and infuriating than chronic pain. Whether it be back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, or hip pain, the result is the same: a stressed-out person.

A Cascade of Harmful Responses

Chronic pain is not only stressful on the psyche of the person, but it is harmful for the physiology of the body. Chronic pain triggers a cascade of harmful responses. One of those responses is elevated cortisol. High cortisol can cause an array of health ailments, ranging from hormone imbalance, to altered digestion, decreased immune function, depression, and brain stress. Another ill effect is neuroinflammation(meaning inflammation in the brain). In studies of people with chronic pain, they were shown to have atrophy of the hippocampus. The hippocampus is the center in the brain that is responsible for memory formation, and organizes information coming in. Many people who have neuroinflammation report brain fog, short term memory loss, and fatigue.

So what do we do to solve chronic pain? Well, the answer lies within electromagnetic fields…

Electromagnetic Fields

The Earth emits frequencies that we need to stay healthy. This is nothing you can hear or see; much like you cannot see the wifi signal in your house. Being connected to the Earth’s magnetic frequency is extremely powerful. In fact, things like walking barefoot in sand or soil, gardening, swimming in the lake, river or ocean, can help recharge the cells of your body; kind of like a battery.

Have you ever felt relaxed and energized while walking in nature, or being on the beach? It’s not in your head! It’s the power of electromagnetic fields. That is what PEMF harnesses and delivers. However, the Earth’s magnetic frequency has decreased over the years due to industrialization, buildings, microwaves, wifi, and shoes with rubber soles. This hinders us and our cells from being the healthiest they can be, and can even lead to symptoms. A disruption or loss of electromagnetic energy leads to changes in function in the body. This can present in many ways in the body: from inflammation, to pain and swelling, to sluggish organ function, and detoxification.

Everything in this world, from our cells, to chemicals, to our own organs produce electromagnetic fields (EMFs). This is precisely how the cells of our body communicate. When a strong signal is lost, health can suffer, much like when your phone has a weak signal: your phone starts to process more slowly, can’t complete tasks that it normally does within seconds, and your text messages and emails come back as, “failed to deliver”. The same applies when your cells can’t communicate: signals are lost and your body can’t complete functions to maintain your health as it normally could.

Back to pain for a moment--- obviously finding and correcting the source of the pain is key. When pain becomes chronic and self-perpetuating, it can become a trigger for disease in itself.

Typical “Solutions” for Chronic Pain

The typical first line of defense for pain is either Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories, like Celebrex, Advil, Aleve, Naproxen, or opioids like Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, and Morphine. NSAIDs are notorious at damaging the gut lining, liver, and kidneys. While they may relieve pain for a short period of time, they can cause problems all over the body. Opioids, while strong pain-relievers, are extremely addicting. In fact, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic a National Emergency. Last year alone, over 61,000 Americans died from opioid overdose; an alarming stat that is skyrocketing. That’s more deaths than car crashes, and more than died in the Vietnam War, for perspective. In order to stop or slow this epidemic, there must be a drug-free, safer alternative to relieve pain without side effects.

opiod

Facts:
-Up to 40% of chronic NSAID users suffer from GI complaints such as: heartburn, nausea, dyspepsia, and abdominal pain.
-NSAIDs are responsible for about 19% of hospital admissions for congestive heart failure. Furthermore, it has been linked that NSAID-related CHF is due to gastrointestinal tract damage.
Hence, PEMF.

How Does PEMF Therapy Help?

We take our cars for tune-ups, we get regular check-ups at the dentist. When was the last time your cells got a tune-up? Think of PEMF as a tune-up for your cells. Our cells are way more important than our teeth and especially our vehicles. They drive our health; whether it be towards good health or disease.

PEMFs works to:

-Reduce pain, inflammation, the effects of stress on the body
-Improve energy, circulation, blood and tissue oxygenation, sleep quality, blood pressure levels, the uptake of nutrients, cellular detoxification and the ability to regenerate cells.
-Balance the immune system
-Relax tense muscles
-Speeds healing of tissues, including bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles

PEMF is an extremely powerful modality with no known side effects. In fact, there have been over 10,000 studies and trials performed on PEMF. Of which 2,000 of those were double-blind studies.

T cells of the immune system are one of the major regulators of inflammation. When inflammation is chronic in nature, these cells are “stuck on”. PEMF has been shown to act on these T cells, helping them to properly shut off the inflammatory cascade when needed. You can think of PEMF as the brakes on a runaway inflammatory train.

pulsed magnetic therapy

It works by sending low frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields through the body, affecting every cell, organ, and tissue along the way without being absorbed.

Increasing Circulation

PEMF aids in increasing circulation to damaged areas of the body. When red blood cells stack on top of one another in the blood vessels, this lessens the load that nutrient-giving cells can carry. PEMF helps to separate RBC(red blood cells), increasing the carrying capacity of red blood cells. This brings vital nutrients, including oxygen to heal and repair cells and tissues. Not only is the circulation improved, but the lymphatic system is stimulated to carry away debris. This is an amazing property of PEMF, healing, repairing and strengthening while cleaning up old or damaged tissues and cells.

Changes are not seen only in the red blood cells though. White blood cells have been shown to be positively affected also, increasing in size and motility. This is important because white blood cells are part of the immune system. They are the body’s defense system against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other foreign invaders.

Certain PEMF devices have been approved by the FDA for pain and tissue swelling, wound healing, fusing broken bones, and even depression. Recent studies have shown great improvement in conditions such as insomnia, Parkinson’s, and psoriasis when treated with PEMF therapy.

If you’re interested in learning more about how PEMF helps with specific health conditions, you can visit Dr. Pawluck’s website. Dr. Pawluck is an M.D. who has comprehensively studied PEMF, and has an abundance of information on his site regarding how PEMF helps with health conditions.

Where This All Happens

In our bodies we have over 70 trillion cells working around the clock to keep our body functioning. Have you heard the old saying, “you’re only as healthy as your cells”? Well, it’s true! Human cells are vital for nutrient absorption, waste removal, and ATP (energy) production, just to name a few.

Each cell membrane has a charge that needs to be maintained. It has been shown that pathologic cells, like cancer cells, have a much lower voltage than a normal, healthy cell membrane. The Goal of PEMF is to re-establish cellular communication and cell integrity.

Cell Regeneration

In order to regenerate, cells content is copied via DNA and RNA replication. Since PEMFs boost electrical communication and structure, it can help with cellular regeneration. This comes in handy when repairing an injured tendon, ligament, muscle, or even organ, like the liver or gut.

PEMF is Backed by Research

Studies have shown that PEMFs are beneficial in angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), treating pain, osteoarthritis, treating chronic wounds, and healing bone fractures.

PEMF is being used at the Johnson Space Center to ensure that astronauts are in top-notch shape, while also alleviating the ill-effects of space travel.

Thanks for explaining how PEMF harnesses the power of electromagnetic fields to help people feel relaxed and energized as well as to help with pain. If you’re considering this method, you’d probably want to talk to your doctor about your condition as well as what devices, medicines, and any other methods are available and have shown success with similar situations. Once you’ve talked to them and chosen the method, whether it’s PEMF or something else, it would probably be a good idea to research the different brands, models, and companies to find one that can give you the best results for the pain you have.
